Please help me edit my layout!

I am no longer helping with modifications to my CSS.
I will provide support as long as you have not yet messed with the code -- think of it as a warranty.

This is mostly because I don't have the time to assist with every unique case. In the past I've helped some people add headers and change stuff around while ignoring others; I've finally come to the decision that it should either be all or nothing. And because "all" is just not feasible for me, it'll have to be "nothing".

My suggestions:
  1. Learn some CSS before attempting to customize your layout. milou_en_avril and W3Schools are good resources. This site also provides an at-a-glance list of CSS properties.

  2. Use Firebug (Firefox only) in conjunction with the above. With Firebug, you can simply click on an element and immediately find which part of the CSS it corresponds to.

  3. Ask at a community like everything_lj, mintyhelp or s2smoothsailing, to name a few.

Help! I don't understand how to install my layout.

The S2 system is pretty easy to understand without a guide, but if you're really confounded, I have a Smooth Sailing guide that covers the vast customization area.

And if you're really confused, hey, that's what everything_lj and other help communities are for. :)

Why isn't my topbar positioned correctly?

  • Click here and make sure that Column (sidebar on left) is selected under Choose a Page Setup.

  • Some of the older Smooth Sailing topbar layouts are dependent on the Navstrip. That said, the topbar for these layouts will not display correctly if the Navigation Strip is disabled. To fix this, see this tutorial. To check if the layout is dependent on the Navstrip or not, see Navstrip under the Layout Notes.

Why is my sidebar on the wrong side of the page?

Go to Select Journal Style and scroll down to Choose a Page Setup. Apply whichever setup is specified in the instructions. If nothing is specified, it should be left at the default setting (Column (sidebar on left)).

Why aren't my userpics positioned correctly?

I recommend rereading the instructions. Some of my Smooth Sailing layouts require a specific entry text wrap setting to display correctly. Check the related post, then go to Display » Additional Options » Wrap Entry text under userinfo and see if you have the correct setting.

My entry subjects aren't showing up properly.

By default, Smooth Sailing inserts a dash between the entry date and entry subject. In the more recent layouts, I make use of a little CSS tweak to remove it. However, if you put a link (regular or user/community) into the subject, it will only display the link.

As the fix for this will vary between layout to layout, I cannot provide a definite solution to this problem. Sorry!

For Smooth Sailing custom comment pages: If you have these turned on, the entry subject will disappear when you load an entry permalink. This is a default feature of the Smooth Sailing style, and has nothing to do with CSS.

Why doesn't my topbar expand to fit content?

Smooth Sailing, unfortunately, possesses an infrastructure that is not readily fit for a topbar layout. I won't go into the nitty-gritty details as I'm sure you aren't interested in those, so I'll just leave it at this: You can either manually edit the height property under .sidebar, or just reduce the amount of content.

Expressive topbars will experience the same issue, and the height can be adjusted under #beta-inner.

Tranquility II topbar layouts should not have this problem.

Why isn't my navigation menu (ie: Recent, Archive, Friends, Userinfo etc.) showing up?

Probably because I disabled it in favor of using the Links List as navigation. You can edit your Links List here.

If you want to show the nav menu, find .header-menu and remove display: none;. Depending on the layout, you might have to manually code the links and menu. You will have to do this on your own, since I am not helping with edits.

Why are my graphics shrunk down?

Some layouts automatically size down images that will stretch the page. If you don't like this, find .entryText img { ... } and remove everything.

Why do my comment pages look strange?

Check to see if I coded them in the first place. Go to the original post for that layout and look under Layout Notes » Custom Comment Pages?.

If you're using a layout without the comment pages, you can either customize them yourself (trust me, it isn't that hard; it's just an extra hassle I sometimes choose to skip) or turn them off. On the customization page, go to Display » Basic Options » Disable customized comment pages for your journal and select Yes.

I used a theme layer to change ______ in my layout, and it won't display properly.

If you used a theme layer to change something, such as the format of your metadata (example), it could potentially change the class or ID used to style that element. In the named example, you would need to add the .currents class to style the metadata.

However, I know next to nothing about theme layers (the metadata layer is the only one I use regularly), so please don't expect me to have answers.

How do I add a custom header image?

Please note that due to my policy concerning editing help, I won't help you install a header. However, you are free to see if anything in this tutorial can help you.

One of the parts in my layout (sidebar, footer, etc) is colored differently from everything else.

This is likely because you didn't set all of the drop down boxes to No on the Custom CSS page. If not, please contact me as it may be a bug in the code.

I use [insert browser here] and my layout looks strange.

I optimize my layouts for the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and -- because I don't have the moolah for more than one computer -- Windows Vista.

Unfortunately, I cannot guarantee that a layout will view perfectly in every browser -- I am no master of CSS and I don't have the time to fight incessantly with IE. If a layout doesn't work with your preferred browser, I'm afraid I cannot do anything more about it.

Most of the newer layouts have also been tested on Internet Explorer 7, Safari, Opera, and Google Chrome. The Layout Notes for each post should point out which browsers are compatible. Of course, you can always just load the live preview for a layout and see if it looks all right in your browser of choice.

Why doesn't my layout work with ads?

I design with ad-less accounts in mind. I do try to check to see if ads will work with my stylesheets, but it is not my top priority -- especially since Basic is now once again an account option. Please check the Layout Notes for each stylesheet to make sure it's compatible with your account type.

Alternatively, you could see if changing the Ad Placement (scroll down past the theme selection) would help.

Do you know how to do stuff with theme layers?

No, I just copy codes from other people.

See also: I used a theme layer to change ______ in my layout, and it won't display properly.

How do I install profile codes?

1. Open the Edit Profile page and scroll down to Bio. Paste the codes into the box.

2. Replace any instances of YOUR TITLE HERE, URL, and lorem ipsum with your own content. Please leave the credit link intact.

3. Scroll down and click Save Changes.

How did you make your metadata look all pretty?

This requires a Paid/Permanent account, since you'll need access to the advanced S2 options. Click here for the tutorial. (Despite the name of the comm, the code works just fine with Smooth Sailing, Expressive, and probably most other styles.)

What is spire?

An open-to-all, free-use layout community focusing on the S2 system and the Smooth Sailing theme in particular.

If you're looking for icons, screencaps, or other miscellaneous graphics, please go to coliseum instead. See this question for more.

Are you scythe? Is this community thrashmetal?

Yes and yes. It wasn't intentional, but I renamed both my layout community and personal journal in a short period of time.

What are your rules for layouts?

Layouts take quite a bit of time and effort to create, so I hope you understand if these rules seem slightly strict:
  • CREDIT is required; it's all I ask after spending my time on the code. Plus, it helps interested folks find their way here if they like your layout. Please link to daemon or spire -- not my old account (noctem) -- in a public location.

  • EDITING is allowed, but please remember that I cannot help you with modifications. See below for my policy on reposting edited code.

  • REDISTRIBUTION is not allowed. If you modify one of my layouts and/or use my CSS as a base, please do not repost the edited stylesheet as "your" work.

Hopefully that isn't too painful.

Can I use your layouts on Livejournal clones like Insanejournal, Dreamwidth, etc.?

Yes, provided you link back to my community here on Livejournal. However, please know that I cannot help you make Smooth Sailing or any other unsupported style work on these sites. (Smooth Sailing, Flexible Squares, and a number of other popular themes are proprietary to LJ and cannot be used on clone sites without layers.)

Dreamwidth users can refer to this tutorial (not mine) for instructions on how to set up a Smooth Sailing layout.

Are you going to bite my head off if I don't comment?

I don't require comments. However, if you would like to make my day, leave a comment when/if you take a layout of mine -- I love seeing them in their new homes! :)

Also, I apologize in advance for not replying to every one of your comments!

Why don't you reply to my comment(s)?

It simply requires a lot of time and effort I don't have, not to mention you probably wouldn't get anything beyond variations of the standard "Thank you!". Consider any new layouts to be your gratification for commenting. :)

Also, I've begun turning off the notification emails for older layout posts.

Where did you get the tiny icons used on your layouts?

They may come from Famfamfam, Pinvoke, Graphicpush, damnicons, or dodoki.

Can I use the community's current layout?

No, that layout will only be available after it is replaced, and even then only when I choose to make it free for public use.

Why can't I join? Will you allow other posters?

This community is fully public and you don't need to join to view posts. If you want to watch us, click here.

Also, this community will remain solely under my control. I will not be opening up to additional posters. The other users listed as members are extra accounts of mine.

What happened to the icons, screencaps, and other graphics hosted at this community?

Those items have been moved to coliseum. I decided to make the split because my organizational OC has been itching to give my layouts the benefit of their own community. Please watch coliseum for further icon/graphics posts.

My question isn't here.

I'm no longer personally helping with layout problems, due to a lack of time and interest. If you encounter a bug*, please leave a comment on the post in which the layout was originally posted and if I see it, I'll check it out.

Please note that I regularly turn off comment notifications for layout posts, typically 2-3 days after they first appear.

*A bug is defined as a problem that shows up when you follow all of my directions to the letter, and use my unedited CSS.

I'm...really not quite sure -- I viewed the Friends page and recent page for your journal, and the userpics seem to be displaying correctly in my browser. I also hopped around the journals of other people using this layout, and it seems to be working fine for them. Perhaps there's a stray setting that's causing the problem? (I'm afraid I don't know which, if any, because I'm not entirely familiar with Tranq II)

any idea how to do that with your layout? I can't even remember where I got the codes to do that but it was a couple of years ago so I thought people would make it a permanent part of their layouts? but then maybe it was only used in flexible squares.... so any ideas? thanks!

I used Flexible Squares codes with my Smooth Sailing layouts and they seemed to work fine. And I don't know if it's possible to make them permanent.

- What kind of modifications did you make to the CSS? Did you touch the title and links CSS in the topbar? Also, did you add the yellow lines? If you need help with modifying the layout, then I'm afraid I don't provide support for this.

- The customized currents at that layout won't work with this, because that layout uses Flex Squares and mine uses Smooth Sailing. You can achieve a similar effect with theme layers. This code should work. (If you're using your paid account)

Hi I saw one of your layouts (http://lj.irondevil.org/california.php) and the first sample entry had some text and then a centered quote-like box with other text in it. The text inside it had lighter font color and in other places I call it a 'quote box' because that's what I call them in forums and stuff, haha. I just wanted to ask how to do that in LJ? If you could help me with that, plese? Thank you :)

Sorry, I'm not currently providing support for modifications of my CSS. However, that quote box is called a "blockquote" and you can edit it by finding the blockquote selector in the CSS. :)

Jan 02 09 (UTC)
When you use that particular theme layer, the metadata is styled with the .currents selector, which isn't in the base Smooth Sailing CSS by default. The only reason it was in the original Aperture was because I forgot to take it out of the CSS when I used it for my own journal.

You can indent it with this code.

.currents {
padding-left:20px;
